Fire and Fury: An Account of An Eighteenth Century Eruption of Mount Vesuvius (English Edition) Versión Kindle - Mount Vesuvius is a volcano located in the southern Italian region of Campania, near to the city of Naples. The mountain is known for its volcanic eruptions. Vesuvius has erupted many times over the course of thousands of years. The most famous eruption took place in 79 AD in Ancient Roman times. Known as the Plinian eruption, this event was witnessed and described by Pliny the Younger, and was also seen by his uncle, Pliny the Elder. The elder Pliny is thought to have died as a result of the eruption. The 79 AD eruption destroyed the Ancient Roman towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum. But, by covering these towns and their inhabitants with ash that preserved the towns as they were at the time.Archaeologists have uncovered evidence of several earlier eruptions by looking at deposits of volcanic tephra that they left behind. The Mercato eruption took place 8,000 years ago. The Avellino eruption, one of the biggest in history, took place 3,800 years ago, destroying several Bronze Age villages nearby. After 79 AD there were many other smaller eruptions, sometimes a half dozen in a single century. The most recent of these took place in 1944.One of the 18th century eruptions of Mt. Vesuvius was witnessed and described by Sir William Hamilton, an English-born British diplomat of Scottish descent. At the time, Hamilton was living in Naples, serving as the British ambassador to the Kingdom of Naples (also known as the Kingdom of Sicily). In Hamilton’s time the Kingdom of Naples ruled most of southern Italy. Later on, in the 1860s, it was conquered by Italian nationalist Giuseppe Garibaldi and incorporated into the new Piedmont-Sardinian-led Kingdom of Italy.Living near to Vesuvius gave Hamilton the chance to investigate the mountain, since he was interested in archaeology and Vulcanology. In the 1760s he witnesses an eruption of the volcano, which he describes here.
